As you may have seen, Shared Parental Leave (where the mother and father or mother’s partner can effectively share the mother’s maternity leave) has become a hot topic over recent months. The regulations are currently before parliament and are due to come into force on 1st December.
The new legislation will apply for eligible parents, where a baby is due to be born on or after 5th April 2015.
This is a big change and it’s expected that employers could start to receive notice of eligibility and the intention to take Shared Parental Leave in the coming months. Employers will need to put in place new policies and procedures to govern this new right, to deal with the complex notification procedures and to sit alongside existing family friendly policies; it’s no easy task.
