The Law Society’s call to increase PIDA protection is commendable; but the question is… Will more regulation change attitudes towards whistleblowers?
The Law Society’s view that employers see whistleblowers as problems – and its proposals to make policies standard and extend the legislation to self-employed workers – is all very good in theory. However, in reality, if it wants to protect people, rather than simply provide a remedy, what is actually required is a complete change of culture within business.
Whistleblowers need to be seen as a positive asset that help uncover and rectify issues rather than as ‘tell-tales’. That isn’t going to happen overnight and I am sceptical that the changes proposed will have a significant impact in practice.
