OFFICIAL PRESS STATEMENT – KATE OLDFIELD – REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REDFERN INQUIRY FAMILIES & MANAGING PARTNER AT DAVIS BLANK FURNISS SOLICITORS

Firstly, the families would like to thank Michael Redfern QC for his dedication and thoroughness during this Inquiry. Ultimately, dignity in death is a fundamental right and that was taken away from these husbands, fathers, brothers and sons. The last few years have been hugely traumatic and that grief stretches back to when the families found out what had happened to their loved ones. Every family has mixed feelings and emotions; although all are relieved to now have some kind of closure.

One of the hardest parts of the process has been that each person affected feels like they have re-experienced bereavements at different stages of the Inquiry as and when the true facts came to light.

The families trust that Michael Redfern QC has come to the right conclusions. Some may not fully concur with all of the findings but they will accept them. The dilemma for each and every one is the difference between the legal and moral duties and boundaries. They know what is legal but that does not stop feelings of a moral injustice.

The Inquiry has clearly proved there was a free for all culture which showed little respect or consideration for a person’s dignity. That was the collective responsibility of Sellafield, the hospitals, the unions and the Coroner which resulted in major breaches of trust, confidence and good faith between employer and employee.

The families now need time to let the report sink in. We will then sit down and look at the options that maybe open to them. Further announcements will be made if and when appropriate.
